Luke 6:12
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
PRAYER is the path which leads to God.
PRAYER is spiritual work - humbling work. It abases intellect & pride, crucifies vainglory, and signals our spiritual bankruptcy. It is the most earnest of the conquering forces with which God will crown our labors, and the most demanding of all disciplines.
Daniel 9:3
And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
Lamentations 3:25The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. Acts 6:4aBut we will give ourselves continually to prayer, Proverbs 15:8bthe prayer of the upright is his delight. | God’s acquaintance is not made hurriedly. He does not bestow His gifts on the casual or hasty comer and goer. To be much alone with Him is the secret of knowing Him. |
If God is not first in our thoughts and efforts in the morning,
He will be last during the remainder of the day.
He will be last during the remainder of the day.
Psalm 5:1-3
Give ear to my words, O Lord,
consider my meditation.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God:
for unto thee will I pray.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord;
in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
consider my meditation.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God:
for unto thee will I pray.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord;
in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
Luke 22:44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. | In prayer we should have our eyes fixed on the great intercessor in Gethsemane, on the drops of blood which fall to the ground in that agony of resignation and sacrifice. |
Psalm 63:1, 8aO God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; My soul followeth hard after thee: | An overwhelming desire which stirs and breaks all self indulgent chains and arouses and inspires us to reach out for God gives our faith its grasp on God, and our hearts the sweetest and fullest revelation of Him. |
Praying – true praying – costs an outlay of serious attention and time, which flesh and blood do not relish. | Matthew 26:41Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. |
Psalm 27:14Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. | Calmness, grasp, and strength are never the companions of haste. Our devotions are not measured by the clock, but time is of their essence. The ability to wait and stay and press essentially belongs to our fellowship with God. |
To pray is the greatest thing we can do; and to do it well there must be calmness, time, and deliberation. Philippians 4:6-7Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. |
